Rock legend Dave Grohl’s second feature just released the first trailer for the musical documentary What motivates us. The visually appealing film, produced by Grohl’s Foo Fighters, is essentially a love letter to all the musicians who have had to tour in the back of their vans.
Ringo Starr, Brian Johnson of AC / DC, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, St. Vincent, Slash and Duff McKagan of Guns & Roses, The Edge of U2, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lars Ulrich of Metallica, Exene Cervenka of X, and many other appearances in Grohl’s doc.
What motivates us follows young bands RadKey and Starcrawler as they take on the world one city at a time while hearing stories from the music industry’s greatest artists, remembering romance and adventure as well as chaos and the confusion of their own time on the road. The film also examines what it takes to convert a pickup truck into a home and how the business tips have been passed down through generations. Before the modern era, musicians had to bring music to fans one show, one night commute, one poorly maintained little club at a time.
“This film is my love letter to all musicians who have ever hopped in an old van with their friends and left it behind for the simple reward of playing music,” former drummer Nirvana Grohl explained. . “What started out as a project to lift the curtain on the DIY logistics of tucking all your friends and gear into a small space for months on end turned into an exploration of ‘why? ‘What motivates us?’ “
The film will be released on Friday, April 30, exclusively on the music-focused streaming site accessible through Amazon Prime Video. Those who live outside of the US will also be able to view it on Amazon’s streaming site.
