TG4 musical series will feature the life of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh – Donegal Daily

TG4’s acclaimed traditional music series ‘Sé mo Laoch returns for its 12th series featuring some of Ireland’s finest exponents of traditional music including Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh from Donegal.

This series highlights in particular the unique tradition of mouth music or portaireacht béal.

The series begins with a look at the life and career of traditional Donegal singer and fiddler Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh.

A founding member of supergroup Altan, Mairéad has taken the music of her native Donegal to stages around the world.

She is also a member of Na Mooneys, String Sisters and Sí Fiddlers. With a remarkable career spanning over 30 years, Mairéad has maintained a distinct sound with her spirited fiddle playing and haunting vocals, making her arguably one of the most defining and iconic voices in modern Irish music.

As well as following Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the intimate 5-episode series looks at lilter Séamus Fay from Cavan, harmonicists John & Pip Murphy from Wexford, singers Áine Uí Cheallaigh from Waterford and Kevin Conneff from the Chieftains in documentary films. an hour that tell tells us the story of these musicians in their own words.
