Nanaimo singer and concert organizing partner to present live music series – Nanaimo News Bulletin

As restrictions on gatherings are eased, live music returns to downtown Nanaimo.

Last weekend, On Live Support: A Van Isle Concert Series kicked off at Queen’s. The four-week series features local and island artists, with in-person and online viewing.

The series is the work of local singer Elise Boulanger and concert promoter Andrew Roberts of Got Pop? Gigs. Boulanger said she was in “grant-writing mode” when she heard about SoundON, a grant for music broadcasters funded by the province and Creative BC. She contacted Roberts and he was able to get a $5,000 grant to put on the show.

“It’s a really great feeling to be able to be at Queen’s again and watch the musicians do their thing,” Roberts said.

Boulanger and Roberts encouraged area artists to register online and they made their selections based on the professionalism, musicality and activity and seriousness of the artists. It was also important that they were all based on Vancouver Island.

“We were trying to keep it in the health district and also celebrate the community closest to us…,” Boulanger said, adding later, “a lot of the responses included that people had materials and they really wanted share it with people. They were happy to give.

She said the musicians were “really excited” to perform in front of an audience, and Boulanger herself will perform on July 3.

“I’m very excited to see the other performers and celebrate them,” she said.
