From Latin jazz to dub reggae, KPBS’s summer musical series has a tune for everyone

KPBS’s summer musical series is back to warm up the summer. This annual series spotlights San Diego’s diverse music scene and features in-depth interviews and performances with local musicians. The 2021 season kicks off on July 28 and will be available on KPBS 89.5 FM (97.7 FM Calexico), KPBS-TV, kpbs.org and the KPBS YouTube channel.

The 2021 series will feature eight musicians and bands whose musical styles range from cumbia to hip hop.

The musicians and groups presented this season are:

July 28 – Jelani aryeh (pop)

August 4 – Finnegan Blue (American / Irish / Copper)

August 11 – Booster (dub reggae / downtempo)

August 18 – Bill Caballero (latin jazz)

August 25 – DJ Artistic (hip hop)

September 1st – Sonido de la Frontera (cumbie)

September 8 – Skrape (electronic)

September 15 – Ken Anderson, Martin Luther King Jr. San Diego Community Choir (gospel / spiritual)

The selected groups were spotted by Kurt Kohnen, KPBS radio production manager and active musician on the local music scene.

“It has been a difficult time for our community, and music helps us manage our emotions and learn more about ourselves. Musicians are an invaluable resource for San Diego – they bring us joy, improve our health mentality and help unify our community.The KPBS Summer Music Series is our way of celebrating and supporting our local musicians, ”said Kohnen.

“This great lineup reflects the incredibly diverse talent that lives here in our hometown. Additionally, we hope to give the audiences who listen to us even more motivation to go out and listen to live music in the coming weeks as the world opens up again after the pandemic, ”said John Decker, Managing Director KPBS Acting Content Assistant.

A new episode will air every Thursday for eight weeks on Midday Edition and every Friday on Evening Edition, from July 29 to September 17, and on kpbs.org/summermusicseries.
