EXCLUSIVE: Here is a nice first clip for an expected musical doc what i know to be truewhich will debut at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival.
As the movie world eagerly awaits the release of Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe biopic BlondScored by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the director’s new musical documentary marks another collaboration with fellow Australian creatives.
Dominik has already teamed up with Cave and Ellis to powerful effect in the stunning western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. They followed that up with a 2016 music documentary Once again with feelingwhich premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
what i know to be true is a companion to the latter film, exploring the creative relationship and songs from Cave and Ellis’ last two studio albums, Ghosteen (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds) and Carnage (Nick Cave & Warren Ellis).
Filmed on location in London and Brighton last year, the film will document the duo’s album debut performances and feature a special appearance from close friend and longtime collaborator Marianne Faithfull. The photography comes from Oscar-nominated cinematographer Robbie Ryan (The favourite).
Interstitial bits between the songs will “illuminate the cosmology and themes of the music.” Viewers will hear about Cave’s writing process red hand files— the letters he chooses to reply to and the replies themselves — and his method. The film will also visit the workshop where Cave creates a series of sculptures illustrating the life of the Devil. The series is described as “a portrait of the life of each of us as we move from innocence to experience, adjusting to the world and the loss that comes with it, and finally confronting our own mortality.
The release is scheduled for later in 2022, when Cave and Ellis will also tour the United States for the first time.
The film is a Bad Seed Ltd Film produced by Uncommon Creative Studios. The producers are Amy James and Isaac Hoff. Executive producers are Charlie Gatsky Sinclair, Brian Message and Beth Clayton. The editor is Matthew C. Hart and the lighting design comes from Chris Scott.
The relationship between longtime collaborators Cave and Ellis was also captured in 2014 doc 20,000 days on earth.
Acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Cave is well known for his baritone voice and for fronting rock band Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, of which violinist and multi-instrumentalist Ellis is a key member. Cave is also known for his film scripts, including Proposal and Without faith or lawand for collaborating with Ellis on the score of films, including Oscar nominees Against all oddsand the above Without faith or law.
