VACAVILLE — The American River College vocal jazz ensemble will perform June 4 to kick off the Nut Tree Plaza summer concert series.
The seven-member group includes Brette Alana Stout, a 2018 Will C. Wood High School graduate, as lead soprano.
Stout was active with Will C. Wood in all things musical: choir, band, and performing in musicals.
“Anything I could get my hands on,” she says.
This will be her last performance with the student band as Stout has just completed her associate degree in jazz studies, with a focus on vocals, but she also plays trumpet, piano and guitar.
She is now focused on developing and promoting her own music, which has a definite jazz base, but she added that she also likes to add a bit of electric funk to the sound. Some of that will be on display for the final set of concerts when she performs on July 9 as Brette Alana with the Steve Krohn Band.
American River College offers two student jazz ensembles. The first is a group of beginners. Whoever performs at the Nut Tree is more experienced, travels a lot to perform and has recently completed an album which will be released in the near future.
Putting together the ensemble’s music during the pandemic has been a challenge, with each member posing their own part, making their own video, then sending it off to be incorporated into the final work.
Stout said that while the band performs what would be considered a traditional jazz ensemble fair, the show includes a variety of other sounds, including pop and a bit of Motown.
“We have quite a bit of variety,” Stout said.
The Nut Tree concert series is free. It operates from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Saturday until July 9. The plaza is located at 1661 E. Monte Vista Ave.
Other artists scheduled to perform are:
June 11: History of Rock Music by Live Music Center Student Rock Bands.
June 18: The Spy Band, also known as Band With The Golden Gun. Enjoy an evening of spies, detectives and secret agent music.
June 25: Sazil Latin Jazz by Delbert Bump.
July 2: Alive Music Orchestra performing a musical celebration of July 4th.
July 9: Brette Alana and the Steve Krohn Band.
