Music documentary

Another music documentary on streaming services this month

the Other Music documentary, which tells the story of New York’s much-loved and much-missed independent record store (which closed in 2016), had a quick digital premiere in April to celebrate what should have been the weekend of Record Store Day, but is now turning into wide release, on on-demand streaming services like iTunes, Amazon Prime, and Google Play on August 25. This date is also just before the first of three “Record Store Day Drops”, which will take place on August 29th.

The documentary includes interviews with The National‘s Matt berninger, The Tiger‘s JD Samson, James luck, Interpol‘s Daniel kessler, Yeah yeah yeahBrian chase, Vampire weekend‘s Ezra Koenig, Magnetic fields maestro Stephane Merritt, TV on the radio‘s Tunde Adebimpe, Mogwai‘s Stuart braithwaite, Dean wareham (Galaxy 500 / Moon), actors Jason schwartzman and Benicio Del Toro, and more. Here is my review for April:

What the film does best is showing how record stores could be a community, where employees got to know their customers, and how person-to-person recommendations offer more than an algorithm could ever do. (not yet at least). Getting back to those little cards, one of my favorite sequences in the documentary is when they bring a few of these cards to life, bring them to life, and use the voices of the clerks who wrote them. When the staff talk about the records they loved on Other Music, you can see the sparkle in their eyes, the passion – and that’s what I missed the most.
