You might not hear country music blaring from many car speakers in downtown New York, Chicago, or Detroit. But a new generation of country artists like Kane Brown, Mickey Guyton and Jimmie Allen are here to show the world that the genre isn’t just music by and for white people wearing cowboy hats. And an Amazon Music Original documentary wants viewers to know that country music has always been black music.

On April 7, Amazon Music announced the release of For love and countrya documentary that sheds light on the complicated relationship that black musicians and artists have had with the country music industry throughout history. For love and country is directed by acclaimed director and photographer Joshua Kissi. “I hope people will watch this beautiful film with a different appreciation for the country music genre and the artists who so boldly choose to stand in the light,” Kissi said.

Viewers will see how black artists not only helped create the genre, but were responsible for its evolution over time, even if they haven’t received the respect or recognition they deserve from the rest of the world. ‘industry. The film shares personal stories of up-and-coming black country artists who are redefining the genre and making music on their own terms. For love and country features interviews and performances by black country artists, including Grammy-nominated artist Blanco Brown, 2021 Amazon music artist for Watch Shy Carter, and Grammy-nominated artist Amythyst Kiah.

Artist BRELAND, who is featured in the documentary, had this to say about his participation in the film:

“Country music has always been the premier genre for telling stories, but many of them have been silenced, erased, and rewritten. What’s so powerful about this unique period in country music history is is that we are finally creating a space to uncover these lost stories and reshape our understanding of what the genre is like. Being part of this film was an amazing opportunity in itself, made even more enjoyable by the brilliant direction of Joshua Kissi and the relationships I was able to form with the other amazing artists in the movie. This is a must watch, trust me.

To add to the experience, fans can also stream brand new Amazon Original songs from Jimmie Allen, Shy Carter, Willie Jones, Amythyst Kiah, Reyna Roberts, Allison Russell and Brittney Spencer on the For love and country official playlist.

For love and country is available now on Amazon Music and Prime Video.
